The working principle of an ammonia evaporative condenser is as follows:
Working fluid: Ammonia gas and water. Ammonia gas serves as the refrigerant due to its high evaporation pressure at low temperatures.
Evaporator: Ammonia gas flows into the evaporator and absorbs heat from the surrounding environment, causing the ammonia gas to evaporate into a gaseous state.
Compressor: The compressor extracts the ammonia gas, increasing its pressure and temperature.
Condenser: The ammonia gas enters the condenser and releases heat to the external environment through heat transfer. The water in the condenser absorbs the heat from the ammonia gas, cooling it down and causing it to condense into a liquid state.
Expansion valve: The condensed ammonia gas passes through the expansion valve, where its pressure is lowered, and enters the next evaporator to begin the cycle again.
By continuously cycling through this process, the condenser can continuously remove heat from the working environment, achieving a cooling effect. This is an efficient refrigeration method.
When ammonia enters the condenser, it is in a high-pressure and high-temperature state. In the condenser, ammonia dissipates heat to the environment through heat transfer, while the water in the condenser absorbs the heat from ammonia. The crossflow or counterflow designation characterizes the orientation of the airflow within the heat-transfer media (fill) in the tower with respect to the direction of water flow.
In counterflow towers air travels vertically upwards through the fill and makes intimate contact with water droplets falling down through the fill media. Hence the air and water travel in opposite directions.
In crossflow cooling towers the air passes through the fill media in a horizontal direction, thus crossing the downward water flow. Counterflow towers are inherently more efficient than crossflow towers.
